The honest take
If you're US-resident, want the broadest model selection you can get, and don't care about Asia-pacific providers or Singapore residency, OpenRouter is the safe pick. If you're a platform team that already runs Kubernetes and wants no SaaS bill at all, LiteLLM self-host is the right answer. If you're building something where every millisecond matters and you can operate Go services in production, Bifrost is worth a look.
Leanroute is for the developer who wants hosted ease + APAC/India provider depth + Singapore residency + a flat BYOK subscription or 0%-per-request credits and isn't willing to give up any of those to get the others. That's a specific bet on a specific market shape; if it's yours, we're the cleanest option that meets the brief.
Adjacent tools
One more in the neighborhood worth naming, even though it sits in a different category from the six above.
- Cloudflare AI Gateway — free, basic routing + caching at Cloudflare's edge. No billing layer, no BYOK encryption story, no per-org cache scoping, no APAC provider catalog. Useful as a development-only frontend in front of one of the gateways above, or as a free analytics layer for hobby-scale projects.
Ruled out by SaaS entirely?
The comparison above is SaaS-first (Portkey, OpenRouter, Helicone) vs. open-source self-host (LiteLLM, Bifrost, Kong). We're currently SaaS-only, but actively gauging demand for a self-hostable or private single-tenant version for teams that need on-prem, air-gap, or sovereignty guarantees SaaS can't offer.
